One to One Counselling
Through email counselling the client will have a record of the work. This provides the opportunity to revisit emails should issues that have been discussed subsequently arise, which could clarify thinking and also provide support.
Email counselling is convenient. It allows the client to write about the issue they wish to bring to counselling at a time that is convenient for them and without the need for travelling to counselling premises. This also means that the client can discuss their thoughts and feelings as they occur, rather than waiting for several days until their next counselling or therapy session. For some people the idea of face to face therapy may feel uncomfortable for their own personal reasons. For these people email and telephone counselling can provide anonymity, which in turn can enable them to talk more freely and could potentially ease the development of trust. Some clients, depending on their needs, may use email or telephone counselling as a stepping stone towards face to face therapy, whereas others may find that email counselling is the most appropriate way of working for them.
An initial telephone contact is encouraged before the email counselling takes place. This is order that expectations, fees, and other formalities can be discussed. As you will read below, this initial telephone contact will act as a consultation session prior to the email therapy start date.
In a face to face consultation session I always re-assure my clients, and acknowledge that they are in the therapy as a result of a topic they are distressed about. I'll want to hear about how you define the problems. What are you looking for help with. If there are uncomfortable symptoms associated, I'll want to assess the level of severity as well as know about your support system, your coping skills etc. At some point I might talk a little more about how I work as it applies to your issue, give you a chance to ask me questions, etc.
The first session is really about information gathering and the very beginning of establishing the therapeutic relationship. It is important that a good level of trust and emotional safety is established in the environment of the therapeutic space. I strive to listen, validate and empathise with your situation and help you to find a way to move forward.
Home visits are offered if you are unable to make your own way to attend sessions. Home visits benefit those who suffer with disabilities, physical and mental. For instance someone who will benefit from therapy sessions in their home are those who suffer with agoraphobia, high levels of social anxiety and / or physical disablement which restricts their mobility.
